How Lola Corre talked about the Merlin law and how it will be discussed in the ficion “Altre Tempi” broadcast on Rai1
In this period I am very busy with many projects and work. But there are.
I could not help but notice that tonight on Rai Uno a fiction entitled ” Other times ” will be broadcast, which deals with the famous Merlin Law which we have discussed so much in recent months … for those who do not know it at this link find the original text.
I have also decided to write my opinion on this very controversial period of our history, addressing it in a different way than usual. When we started the first meetings to write the storyboard of Lola Corre , we realized how broad the prostitution topic is in Italy (and beyond). Broad in its deepest content.
It is not so easy nowadays to tackle a topic without being immediately considered good- natured , radical chic (as they say in Milan) or bigots (as in this case); but I did it, we did it. We wanted to show our point of view.
There are so many realities that hide behind this world so steeped in the social fabric that it goes out on the streets, and then returns to the houses of private appointments conveyed through the web.
“Seventy thousand prostitutes, 9 million customers for a turnover of 5 billion euros. These are the estimates on the prostitution market in Italy prepared by the Social Affairs Commission of the Chamber in 2010. Numbers are random and probably constantly changing. Although there is no way to concretely verify its full reliability, it is clear that the phenomenon of prostitution, on the street or indoors, has the proportions of a large industry .“(source ilfattoquotidiano )
In the numerous concerts that I have held and in which I have dealt with the subject, I have always clashed with people who told me ” In my opinion it is a profession that should not exist “. To which I always replied that it is not possible to address issues by eliminating them. We must face them, study them and try to understand how they can evolve to make everything legal and better for everyone (am I a utopian? let’s face it without any kind of worry: it is the oldest profession in the world! What do you think the merlin law has improved the situation? I do not believe. Excuse my spontaneity.
I have not followed television for some time now, or at least I choose when and what may interest me (see The Walking Dead : D). But I can already imagine the debates full of embalmed faces who only know how to speak by hearsay and have never investigated the various situations we have in this period regarding prostitution:
- There are those who would like to repeal the law and reopen closed houses / brothels
- There are those who would like to legalize the profession of prostitution and say that they too have to pay taxes
- There are those who think that this is not a job but a shame for the woman, sold and used as an object
- There are those who say that prostitution should not exist
- There are those who should represent the law but, get a ” benefit ” in exchange for ” protection ” (read between the lines)
- There are also those who remain a criminal and take advantage of it, exploiting these girls beyond belief
- There are those who choose to make it a job, at home
- There are those who choose to make it a job, at the home of others
- There are those who choose to make it a profession, opening private clubs
- etc … etc …
I could continue this list for a long time. I stop here. The situation is clear. Also my position: there is no single solution. There is a clever way to evolve the situation by trying to improve this situation in small steps. But maybe I will be a utopian who thinks that even corruption is no longer part of this world … maybe …;)
You all know Lola Corre’s video by now. As we have also addressed the issue and for those who do not know, at this link you will find some videos.
Now, all that remains is to talk about it together.
How do you think? Have you ever heard of the Merlin Law?
How do you see the situation of prostitution in Italy today?
Has it improved or worsened since the 1950s?
What would you do?
What are your proposals?
